MARINE PRODUCT CARE

Caring for your Marine Glass or Acrylic Windows, Windscreens & Doors

At ALFAB, we know that your boat’s windows and windscreens are constantly exposed to harsh marine conditions — salt, sun, wind, and debris all take their toll over time.

Proper cleaning and maintenance is essential to preserve clarity, prevent damage, and extend the life of your acrylic and glass components.

This guide outlines simple, effective care practices to help keep your marine windows performing and looking their best — whether you’re maintaining a new installation or protecting an existing one.

Boat window care

Acrylic

Here at ALFAB, our recommended cleaning method of your acrylic boat windscreen or marine windows is to use soap or household detergent in warm water and to wipe down using a soft clean cloth or cotton wool. Regular cleaning with fresh water and a soft cloth will protect the product, keeping it looking newer for longer.

  • Materials or brushes of a harsh nature are not recommended as they will abrade the acrylic surface.
  • Organic cleaning agents, such as acetone or thinners, must not be used as they will attack all grades of acrylic sheet.
  • Cleaning or polishing agents in pressure cans are also not recommended.

Glass

Regularly cleaning your marine glass with fresh water and a soft cloth will protect the product, keeping it looking newer for longer.

  • Use commercial glass cleaners (eg, Windex).
  • Do not use harsh chemicals, abrasives or metal scrapers (eg, razor blades).

Maintenance

  • Keep the tracks and seals free from grit, dust and grime.
  • Lubricate tracks and contact surfaces with a silicone spray regularly to assist the moving glass panels.
  • Do NOT use harsh cleaners with high alkaline or acidity content (ie. Truck Wash) to wash windows or tracks.

FAQ’s

Use products designed specifically for acrylic (PMMA) and polycarbonate, applied with a soft microfibre cloth and plenty of clean water to rinse away grit. If you’re unsure which product is suitable, ALFAB can recommend appropriate care products based on your glazing material and application.

Yes. Avoid harsh solvents, abrasive cleaners, scouring pads and aggressive compounds, as these can scratch or haze acrylic and polycarbonate. When in doubt, test a small, inconspicuous area first or contact ALFAB for guidance.

Regular gentle cleaning helps prevent salt, grime and airborne particles from building up. Frequency depends on conditions and use, but rinsing with fresh water after marine exposure is a good habit to reduce long-term wear.

Restoring clarity depends on the glazing material and the type of damage. Light hazing and fine scratches may be improved with appropriate restoration products, while deeper damage may require refurbishment or replacement. ALFAB can advise the best option after reviewing photos or inspecting the window.

Always rinse first to remove grit, use a soft microfibre cloth, avoid dry wiping, and keep abrasive contaminants away from the surface. Correct cleaning products, protective covers and proper storage also help reduce scratching.

Sometimes, but not always. Product choice depends on the glazing material (glass, acrylic or polycarbonate) and any surface coatings. ALFAB can recommend suitable options based on your specific window type and application.

In many cases, acrylic boat windows can be cleaned or lightly restored, but replacement becomes the better option when the window is heavily scratched, crazed, cloudy, cracked, leaking, or no longer sealing correctly in the frame. Older acrylic can also become brittle over time, reducing visibility and safety.

If visibility is poor, water ingress is occurring, or the window has lost its structural integrity, replacement is often safer, longer-lasting, and more cost-effective than repeated repairs. Modern replacement windows can also offer improved clarity, strength, UV resistance, and overall performance compared to older materials.

In many situations, replacing a boat windscreen or window is easier and more affordable than people expect. You can get a simple, no-obligation quote by entering your details here:
