Window Install Put to the Test
As featured by out friends at SV Delos
When the crew from SV Delos undertook a the construction of their new aluminium catamaran, they partnered with ALFAB for the design, manufacturing and installation of their vessels new windows.
This real-world application demonstrates what proper boat window installation should look like — controlled, engineered, and built to last. Take a look and see how part of the process of installing windows into a new boat comes together.
The video also explains a few other things such as ceramic bands on the windows, the importance of clearances, surface preparation and more.
Correct Boat Window
Installation Process
1. Assessment & Inspection
We inspect frame integrity, bonding surfaces, water ingress risks, and structural loading factors.
2. Precise measurement
Use of precise measurement or advanced scanning using 3D scanners ensures exact templating — critical for curved, complex, or ageing hull structures.
3. Marine Glass Manufacturing
All marine glass and acrylic panels are designed and supplied by ALFAB, to meet strict quality and marine safety standards.
4. Surface Preparation
If replacing existing glass, removal of old adhesives, corrosion treatment, substrate preparation, and structural correction will be undertaken where necessary.
5. Precision Glass Installation
Bonded using marine-grade structural adhesives designed to accommodate movement, UV exposure, and thermal expansion. Strict adherance to temperature and moisture conditions is necessary to ensure longevity in the installation.
6. Sealing & Finishing
Clean edge finishing, correct cure times, and water testing.

Boat Window Installation FAQ’s
How long does boat window installation take?
Installation time depends on the size of the window, the type of vessel and the adhesive system used. Most marine window installations require controlled curing time to ensure correct structural bonding and long-term performance. In some cases, a return visit may be required for finishing or final inspection.
Can marine windows be replaced without removing the frame?
In many cases, yes. However, each installation must be assessed to ensure the existing frame and substrate are structurally sound. Proper preparation is critical to achieving a secure and watertight result.
Is glass better than acrylic for boat windows?
Both materials have advantages. Toughened glass offers superior scratch resistance and long-term UV stability. Acrylic is lighter in weight but may craze or scratch over time depending on exposure and maintenance. ALFAB can advise the most suitable option for your vessel and application.
Do you offer installation for custom builds?
Yes. ALFAB works with boat builders, refit yards and private owners on custom builds and replacement projects. Installation can be tailored to suit the vessel design and construction requirements.
