Another day at the office for the team at ALFAB at the Gold Coast marine precinct, with an 85 foot motor yacht recently receiving new windows and portlights.

After years of exposure to UV, salt and constant marine conditions, the original glazing had reached the point where replacement was the smart move — both to ensure certification requirements are reached and to ensure the vessel remains sealed, secure and looking sharp.

Another yacht in refit, another set of marine windows brought up to standard — scanned, manufactured and installed with attention to detail.

Why install new boat windows and portlights?

Marine windows are structural elements as much as aesthetic ones. Over time:

  • Seal integrity can reduce

  • Frames can fatigue or corrode

  • Certification standards may evolve

  • Minor water ingress risks increase

Addressing these issues before they become major problems helps protect both the vessel and its long-term value. As such, replacement glass is being manufactured specifically for this vessel, designed to suit the existing apertures while meeting current performance and aesthetic expectations.

Large marine glazing projects may look complex from the outside, but at their core they’re about careful measurement, considered manufacturing, and attention to detail.

Capturing the Vessel Accurately

Rather than relying solely on drawings (which is not often available for bespoke replacements) or guesswork, the vessel was 3D scanned prior to manufacturing. On yachts of this scale, subtle curves and tolerances are rarely identical from one section to the next. Digital capture allows each replacement unit to be manufactured to suit the exact geometry of the hull.

This approach reduces guesswork and ensures alignment with both structural and certification requirements.

Purpose-Built Marine Windows

The new glazing units are being purpose-built for this refit, designed to integrate with the existing structure while improving durability and sealing performance.

Boat window replacement projects like this are often proactive. Addressing ageing glazing before it fails helps prevent water ingress, interior damage, and unnecessary downtime.

Boat Window Installation in the Yard

Following manufacturing, the project moves into removal of the existing units and careful boat window installation takes place onsite.

Managing both supply and window installation ensures alignment between measurement, manufacturing and final fitment. Correct sealing, structural integrity and finish are critical in marine window installation — particularly on larger yachts where tolerances matter.

For vessels undergoing refit, repair or certification upgrades, coordinated boat window installation within the yard helps streamline the process and maintain quality control throughout.
